Recruits and trains volunteers to tutor English speaking adults in San Francisco who wish to learn to read or improve their basic reading and writing skills. Students are matched directly with a tutor and meet in branch libraries, homes, offices or other community sites.

Also fosters public awareness of the problem of adult illiteracy through promotional campaigns. The San Francisco Public Library maintains a library collection of over 400 titles for adult new readers, tutors, and teachers, including self help, leisure reading and resource material. Tutors design the sessions integrating the student's interests.
